The Bachelor of Food Science and Technology is your opportunity to make a difference to the health and wellbeing of future generations. Graduates of the course are critical thinkers. They are very much in demand in food industries due to their scientific understanding of the technical aspects of food, beginning with harvesting and preparation and ending with consumption.
The course focuses firstly on helping you develop a greater understanding of the fate of agricultural raw materials, and secondly on the technology of food such as preservation, processing, packaging and distribution to ensure that food is safe, nutritious and wholesome.
The highly technical field of medical bioscience is all about the human body, health care and disease. But you won’t be peering through microscopes all the time. Fieldwork with a laboratory or community health organisation and professional training are also built into your course. This means a wide range of career prospects both in Malaysia and overseas.
A special feature of the degree is its specific development for the Malaysian context. The course provides you with an understanding of medical bioscience in a tropical environment, with a particular focus on techniques in tropical medicine.
The course commences with a foundation year, covering biology, biotechnology, chemistry and statistical reasoning and analysis. You also study a wide range of topics specific to medical bioscience and undertake a professional attachment to a clinical or medical laboratory. Every subject is tailored to meet the specific demands of our region and we make sure you leave with a sound understanding of ethics.
Science is a way of life. Science graduates have diverse and interesting careers, but not all science graduates become scientists. You can use your degree as a springboard to any career where critical thinking, the ability to analyse and investigate new information, a commitment to lifelong learning and evidence-based decision making are valued.
You experience flexibility and choice from day one. Your options range from cutting-edge theoretical and applied science to new interdisciplinary fields. The Bachelor of Science is an internationally recognised qualification that you can tailor to suit your interests and talents. If you’re uncertain about which area of science you like best, you can try a bit of everything and select your area of specialisation at second year.
You’ll also gain a firm foundation in generic skills like quantitative literacy, data analysis, information literacy, problem solving, critical thinking, communication and presentation skills, and the capacity to work in teams.
Upon successful completion of the bachelor’s degree, you can opt to extend your studies for an extra year. This course aims to increase your understanding of theoretical and methodological aspects of research, to develop your analytic, research and communication skills, and to provide you with advanced knowledge in specific areas of the science and practice of psychology. In this program you must complete coursework components designed to expand your knowledge of statistics and the ethics of psychological research and practice, and broaden your understanding of the discipline. You will also undertake a supervised research project which aims to provide training in both discipline-specific and generic research skills. The research project forms the basis of a literature review and research paper presented at the end of the course.
This course also prepares you for the transition into pursuing a higher degree such as Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Psychology (DPsych) as well as Masters in Psychology courses. Students with an Honours degree in Psychology from Monash University Malaysia can apply for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs directly. The program also includes coursework components designed to expand your knowledge of statistics and the ethics of psychological research and practice.
The Bachelor of Psychological Science (Global Stream) is designed for students who wish to study psychology intensively over a three-year period, with a view to pursue a career as a research or professional psychologist. In the three years of the degree, students will cover the core areas of the scientific discipline of psychology, as well as being able to pursue their specific interests in a range of areas relating to the application of the scientific discipline of psychology. By pursuing this degree, the students will gain in-depth knowledge of how studies on psychology, cognition, emotion, society and the self can and have been applied to help with enhancing human lives. With full 16 units in psychology, students will have the opportunity to gain deeper understanding of the area/discipline of psychology. The students will qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Psychological Science upon successful completion of the course. Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Psychological Science will be eligible to apply for entry to other fourth year programs in psychology, such as the Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology.
Students will enhance their ability to develop careers in psychology through the development of effective interpersonal and communication skills, the mastering of essential research design procedures, statistical analyses and methods of written and oral communication relevant to the field of psychology. Students will also be develop a better understanding of pure science and social science through this program, learning to apply their knowledge to their learning in psychology.
